YOU MUST TELL THEM!

They will find out.

You need to go to the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners website right now and fill out an application for a PETITION FOR DECLARATORY ORDER. You can get this at:

http://www.bon.state.tx.us/olv/pdfs/DOapp.pdf

You will also need a set of fingerprints on the fingerprint cards that you get at the same website. Be prepaired to lay out some cash at this point. It will be worth it.

You will need to fill out the packet and follow the instructions that come with it. They (the board) will then decide if you can get a liscense. Please do this before you spend a lot of money and time on classes. You will go throught an extensive
FBI background check before you can get a liscense

This porcess can easily take several months, so start ASAP.

Now, the good news.

If it is only one incident and it was 12 years ago and a misdemeanor, the chances of you having any trouble are actually very slim.

Now if it was drugs, a sex crime, an abuse case, assult or a felony then you would be in a very different boat.

I'll bet that nearly 20% of my class had to do this. And the school will do their best to keep it quite.

Oh, my school also ran a check on our fingerprints themselves before they allowed us in the program

Trust me, you will be one of several in your class in the same boat. But if you try to hide it and not be up front, then you are royally screwed.

Just jump throught the hoops and do not worry about it. You should be fine.

Good luck!

Remember, the smartest students do not get the best grades. They go to the ones who study the most!

State Boards, and most Nursing Schools will perform a background check before they allow you onto the clinical sites. For the school's it is normally a requirement of the school's and the facilities liability coverage.

When you fill out the application for a license, it will ask if you have ever been convicted of any crime felony or misdemeanor other than a traffic violation. If so they will ask you to submit documentation. In your situation, it is likely you would be given a license without any issue, due to the nature of the crime, and the period of time. However, if you did not report the crime, and they found it on the background check they would likely deny you a license, for making a false statement on the application.

The people at the TX Board are very reasonable about life issues, But you need to be straight with them.

However, you need to understand that every time you apply for a position at a health care facility or agency they will probably run a background check.

I just did a one day per diem for an agency which needed assistance, and they ran the background for a one day assignment.

What you need to do is to check with the State Nursing Board to determine if this will bar you from licensure. Or, if it does, the schools will reject your application. This is something that you should disclose so as to not go through the motions of earning a degree that you can not use.
While you may have gotten your act together, as a nurse you will be in a delicate position to come into contact with patient belongings. You will not believe what people bring with them to the hospital (even for planned surgeries!).
I would check before spending money on application fees, transcripts and so on.

As an LPN(same as an LVN) and a physically disabled person, this career doesn't seem to be for you.First of all,the schooling itself is very difficult and in order to get your license you must pass an exam given by the state. As a nurse, you have many things on your plate at the same time and have peoples lives relying on you. When I worked at the local nursing home,I was in charge of the floor and had the responsibility of caring for 60 residents. It is a very difficult job both physically and mentally.
You can get assistance paying for education, you might want to look at other possibilities as far as a career.

My brother in law is disabled and is on ssi. He received help with his college expenses through a program called voc rehab. I found this website for voc rehab in California. It is for Los Angeles county, but if you are not in that area they should be able to direct you to where you need to go.
